Disarmament Week 2024: Advocating for a Safer, Weapon-Free World
Event Dates: October 24 – October 30
Every year, Disarmament Week highlights the critical importance of disarmament efforts in building a safer, more secure world. Beginning on October 24, which also marks the anniversary of the United Nations’ founding, this week-long observance has been a global call for action since the UN’s 1978 special session on disarmament. Through this initiative, the United Nations and its member states encourage governments, as well as non-governmental organizations, to foster public awareness and promote understanding of disarmament issues.

Historically, disarmament has been a pathway to reduce threats and prevent crises and armed conflicts. Since the formation of the United Nations, disarmament and arms control have played a pivotal role in promoting international peace. Today, heightened geopolitical tensions call for collaborative dialogue and diplomacy over further arms accumulation.
The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear arms, remains a serious threat, while conventional arms and the illicit weapons trade undermine international peace and sustainable development. In addition, the rise of new technologies, such as autonomous and cyber weapons, presents emerging threats to global stability, prompting further international scrutiny and discussion.
Efforts toward disarmament extend beyond security alone; they aim to protect civilians, build trust between nations, promote sustainable development, and uphold human rights. The UN’s Secretary-General António Guterres has introduced a comprehensive disarmament agenda to address the challenges posed by both traditional and emerging threats, emphasizing the need to secure a peaceful and stable future for all.
Disarmament Week thus celebrates the collective efforts of states, NGOs, and international actors who are actively working toward a world where security is achieved through disarmament, non-proliferation, and a commitment to peace. As the global community confronts the dangers posed by weapons of mass destruction, conventional arms, and cyber threats, Disarmament Week reaffirms the importance of global cooperation in reducing armaments for a safer world.
